Outdoor education is an integral component of Pono’s educational program. Fifty percent of the students’ time is spent outside of the classroom through weekly field trips in and around New York City. Pono students learn from visits to nature reserves, farms, museums, factories, sports and art studios, organizations, and businesses. The children engage with members of our larger community and deepen their connection to nature. Outdoor education is experiential and immersive, allowing hands-on exploration and activities not available inside the classroom. The children have collected and studied pond specimens, bound books, made gelato, and much more.
Field trips are based on the children’s interests.
