Pono initiated its study abroad program with the belief that international learning experiences not only foster independence and confidence in children, but also strengthen their compassion for others and give them valuable new perspectives.

Costa Rica

In September 2019, two Pono educators and a group of older Pono students, ages 10–12, traveled to Costa Rica to study biodiversity and ecology. One highlight was an overnight stay at the rainforest campus of Earth University, where the children toured organic and sustainable farms. In Puerto Viejo, Pono students visited cacao plantations and learned the chocolate making process, from bean to bar. On a guided hike through Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, they witnessed diverse ecological habitats and a variety of wildlife, including sloths, toucans, poison dart frogs, and a yellow viper. The students also had the opportunity to visit an indigenous Bri Bri community and learn about medicinal plants, practice traditional chocolate making, and eat a Bri Bri-style meal.

This trip helped forge authentic connections between Pono students and local communities in Costa Rica and enriched the children’s understanding of biodiversity and sustainability. Pono looks forward to future study abroad opportunities to further deepen children’s understanding of our world.
