Casting call for In Character!

Do you secretly dream of being Emma Watson? Perhaps you stand in front of the mirror reciting Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, or maybe you're more of a Beyoncé in the shower type. If you've ever had fun "being someone else" or think you would, this class is for you! Learn about history while developing your acting and improvisation skills, and gain self-confidence as you do it!

Your mission: Each week, choose a current or historical famous person. Learn key facts from the person’s biography, their mannerisms, and several of their famous quotes. Come to class in costume, prepared to say your quotes in character, and have people guess who you are. Once we know everyone’s characters, we’ll create a group skit connecting them. All characters welcome!

Greetings "In Character" participants! I'm so excited for our first class! In preparation for it, please read the guessing game rules below, and print them out, if you have a printer. Also, please read the message following the game rules. Looking forward to being in character with you!

In Character “Guessing Game” Rules

1.       When a participant’s name is called, it’s time for their turn. They will unmute themselves, say hello, and say their character’s famous quotes the way that character might have said them, with the kinds of facial expressions, hand gestures, and voice that character might have used. They must not say their character’s name.

2.       Whoever wants to ask them questions will raise their hands. The host will call on them one by one, they will unmute themselves and ask their question, and the character can answer. Please do not ask or say who you think the character is yet.

3.       Students will then have a chance to search for the famous quotes online.

4.       At that point, the host will unmute everyone, and say “Everybody, talk together!” This is the time when everyone (besides the character) can talk to each other to try to help each other guess who the character is. After a little while, the character will reveal their name!

5.       Now it’s time to find out who the next character is. we’ll follow the same rules

*Note*

-You may keep an informational print-out or web page (Wikipedia, etc), nearby or open, as well as a search device, to get help answering questions about your character whose answers you don’t know or can’t remember.

Message:

You may prepare a brief (1-2 minute) scene from of character’s work to perform (if s/he is an actor, singer, dancer, news reporter, talk show host, politician—speech or interviews), or read (if s/he is an author, visual artist, or scientist). Depending on how many students we have, there may or may not be time to perform them during the first class.
