Evolution of Democracy, A Mentorship at the New-York Historical Society
Evolution of Democracy, A Mentorship at the New-York Historical Society
The goal of this mentorship is to help students understand the concept of democracy, as crafted by ancient Athenians, and how it inspired the American founders. Over the course of 4 days, and through examining primary and secondary sources, students will trace the evolution of American democracy from the Constitution to the present day. They will also learn about power, politics, and active engagement while comparing and contrasting different forms of democracy and activism across civilizations and political systems. This mentorship will culminate with a printmaking art project for students to creatively synthesize and share their understandings of the concept of power to people, voting rights, and civic engagement.
